Native
American Healing
Native American Traditional Healing offered at OGL
Healing Circle—
A traditional Healing or
Spiritual Circle is offered to patients while in attendance at Olalla
Guest Lodge. The Circle is facilitated by a Native American, in recovery
from addictions, who is an Elder member of the Lakota Tribe in North
Dakota.
The Eagle feather, traditional Native American music and smudging
with sage and sweet grass is an integral part of this ceremony. Patients
bring “prayer ties” (that they have created with tobacco, cotton cloth
and thread) which are offered along with personal thoughts towards
specific intentions.
Patients also are offered a class that incorporates the Medicine
Wheel, a Native American traditional teaching. This teaching involves
seeing the whole person—body, mind, spirit and emotions as an integrated
part of all creation. Patients are shown how addiction involves the
whole person and that recovery must also involve the whole person.
A “burning” also takes place once a week whereby patients are offered
the opportunity to “let go of the past” by burning written material and
to be smudged (blessed) with an Eagle feather and sweet grass or sage.
