AS.W. “Bill” Shaw MD, Medical Director, Olalla Recovery Center (since 1998) is a Family Practice physician working in Addiction Medicine for the past 20 years. From 1985 to 1992 he was the Head of the U.S. Navy Alcohol Rehabilitation Department at the U.S. Naval Hospital, Oakland, California. Certified in Addiction Medicine in 1988 by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and serves as a member of the ASAM membership committee. Dr. Shaw currently is a member of the Kitsap County Substance Abuse Advisory Board (SAAB) and the Substance Abuse Prevention Association of Kitsap County. He also is a member of the King County Bar Association Drug Policy Project (DPP) Steering Committee and Washington State Division of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Nicotine Policy Advisory Committee (NICPAC). He is a retired life member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and of the Washington Society of Addiction Medicine. Randy Viers, MS, CDP, CDS III, NCAC II, Program Director, directs all clinical operations at Olalla Recovery Centers. He began an internship in chemical dependency at Olalla in 1993, left for a time to work in an Eastern Washington CD program but returned in 1997 as a counselor. He was promoted to Inpatient Treatment Supervisor in 2000 and three years later became the Program Director for both residential and outpatient services. Randy earned a BS in 2002 and MS in 2004 both in Chemical Dependency Counseling from Madison University. His certifications include: State of Washington, Northwest Indian Alcohol-Drug Specialist Certification and NAADAC Certification Commission. Rebecca Smith, BA, CDP, BRI II, RYT, Director of Marketing, directs the Admissions Department and the Yoga Program for Olalla Recovery Centers (since 1995). In CD since 1981, she has worked for a variety of hospital-based and residential programs. She has also designed clinical interventions for addicts/alcoholics since 1993. She graduated, Cum Laude, from Eastern Washington University, took her CD coursework at Edmonds Community College and her Yoga Teacher Certification training at Ananda. She is a Board Registered Interventionist II through AISCB. She publishes a recovery-oriented newsletter and is currently writing a book on using Yoga for Relapse Prevention. She is a member of EAPA, IAYT and DISCB. Scott Benson, BA CDP, Treatment Supervisor, has been with Olalla Recovery Centers since 1988. He has a Bachelors Degree from Washington State University, 1976, has been a State Certified CD Counselor since 1988 and nationally certified through NAADAC since 1996. He has received specialized training in Gorski Relapse Prevention. He was born and raised in the Puget Sound area and is an alumnus of Olalla Guest Lodge, 1982. Janet S. Cleator, CDPT, Family Program Counselor for Olalla Recovery Centers. Jan became a licensed clinical dependency counselor in 1990 in fort Worth Texas. She worked at HCA Hospital and as addiction specialist at two regional counseling centers. She returned to the Pacific Northwest in 1999 and has worked for Olalla Recovery Centers since 2002. Jan works as a relief counselor for Olalla in both the inpatient and outpatient programs and became the Family Program Counselor in 2006. She as been in recovery since 1977. George Fields, AA, CDP, Lead Counselor, is responsible for training all new CDPTs, coordinates work loads with group counselors, and fills in for the Treatment Supervisor. He has worked as a chemical dependency counselor since 1995 and has been at Olalla Recovery Centers since 1996. He retired from the US NAVY in 1986, 22 years, and is a Vietnam Veteran. Steve Morris, BA, CDPT, Inpatient Counselor, has a BA from Harvard, majoring in music. He is a composer, pianist, teacher, and writer in the field of classical music. After starting his own recovery in 1991, he became interested in alcoholism counseling. He began chemical dependency coursework at Tacoma Community College in 2002, and joined Olalla Recovery Centers in October of that year as a Support Coordinator. He became a full-time counselor in 2003 and was certified as a Chemical Dependency Counselor in October, 2007. Lois West, BA, CDPT, Inpatient Counselor, received a BA in 2007 from Western Washington University in Human Services. She has been working in the field since 2004 to complete requirements to become a certified Chemical Dependency Counselor. Currently she is a full-time counselor and assists in Olalla's Native American Spiritual Program. Terry L. Pettit, MSW, CDP, Managed Care Coordinator, received her Masters Degree in Social Work from the University of Washington in 1982. Since then she worked as an individual, group, and family therapist both in clinical and in home settings. She spent 15 years as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor, working with injured workers. She developed a continuing education workshop for CD counselors working with early recovering alcoholics/addicts on vocational rehabilitation issues and has worked with recovering alcoholic/addict Native Americans on vocational issues. Steven D. Penney, MEd, CDP, Inpatient Counselor, received his Masters Degree in Counseling from Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon, 1983. His interest in chemical dependency was prompted by close family/friend’s addictions. He became certified in chemical dependency in 1989, and has worked in a variety of settings including a County program in Grays Harbor, an adolescent program in Tacoma, as a Case Manager in Bellevue, a Treatment Professional in Everett, and since 2002, has been with Olalla Recovery Centers. Melody Starkey, CDPT, Women's Inpatient Counselor, has an AAS from Olympic College and is currently completing her Bachelor's degree. She has been working for Olalla Recovery Centers since 2004, starting as support staff, and than as an intern before becoming Olalla's women's counselor. Karen Augustine, CDP, CDSIII, Outpatient Counselor, has worked in the chemical dependency field since 1984. She has worked with EAPs, developed an EAP film for the Boeing Company and presented trainings to DSHS. She has received training in the CENAPS/Gorski Relapse Prevention model, training working with CD hearing-impaired, and training on CD interventions. Karen is currently enrolled in an MS program on Addictions. Karen is also developing a Nicotine Cessation program. Sober since 1982. Carol Potts, CDP, CDSIII, NCAC I, Women’s Outpatient Counselor, began working at Olalla Recovery Centers (as an intern) in 1995. A year later, she transferred to inpatient, working as Women’s Counselor for five years. She was involved with the Washington State Women’s Coalition and attended numerous trainings specializing in the needs of women, addiction and relapse prevention. She left Olalla in 2002 to work with CD women at a local prison, returning a year later to the outpatient program to focus on women’s groups and intensive outpatient clients. Carol’s certifications include: State of Washington, Northwest Indian Alcohol-Drug Specialist Certification and NAADAC Certification Commission. She is an Olalla Guest Lodge alumnus, in recovery since 1992.
